Family therapy sessions are encouraged in conjunction with individual therapy for adolescents at agreed intervals. Ideally, a teen might have 3-4 individual sessions, followed by a family session, and repeat. Individual parent coaching sessions are also periodically encouraged, apart from family sessions. Family involvement in the adolescent counseling process is welcome and important to fostering behavioral change and maintaining healthy functioning over time. Providing parents with tools to modify their approach to fostering healthy functioning in their child, as well as therapy that will improve their own coping and stability often relieves stress and improves the relationship between parent and child which makes both parties more receptive to truly hearing and validating each other.
